How to play Who Said Dat?

A party game about knowing your friends, or pretending to be them. If you've played The Game of Things, you already know the idea; this is it for phones and video calls. Everyone answers the same prompt in secret, then you take turns working out who wrote what.

1. Set up

One player makes a room in the lobby (public for anyone, or private) and shares the 4-letter code or the link. The host picks how long everyone has to answer and to guess, can switch on spicy prompts, and can add their own. When everyone's hit ready, the host starts the game.

2. Answer the prompt

Each round has one prompt, like "The worst thing to find in your sandwich", and one player leading it. Everyone, the leader too, writes an answer before the timer runs out. It can be your honest answer, or what you think someone else in the group would say. You can change it until everyone's in.

3. Guess who said dat

All the answers show up, without names. The leader guesses first:

  • Pick an answer (not your own) and say who wrote it.
  • Right? You score a point, and that player is out: they can't guess for the rest of the round. Then you guess again.
  • Wrong, or out of time? The turn passes to the next player who's still in.
  • When only one answer is left hidden, it's revealed and the round is over. Nobody scores for it.

4. Win

Every player leads one round, so a game has as many rounds as players. Most points at the end wins.

Tips

  • Answer as someone else to stay hidden longer. If your answer is never guessed, you keep guessing all round.
  • Watch who guesses what. Wrong guesses tell you a lot.
  • Keep it short and punchy. Long answers are easier to spot.

FAQ

How many players do I need?
3 to 10. It's best with 5 or more, when there are more answers to hide yours among.
Do I have to answer as myself?
No! Write what you'd really say, or what you think someone else in the room would say. Throwing people off is half the fun.
What happens if I don't answer in time?
Whatever you've typed is sent when the timer runs out. If you haven't typed anything, you sit that round's answers out, but you still get to guess.
Can people watch without playing?
Yes. Pick Watch on a room in the lobby, or add /spectate to the room link. Spectators see everything players see (except whose answer is whose) but can't play. Great on a TV.
What's the spicy deck?
Grown-up prompts the host can mix in. Leave it off for family game night.
Can we use our own prompts?
Yes. Before the game, the host can add as many as 50 prompts. Write {leader} and it's replaced with the name of whoever leads that round.
What if someone leaves or loses connection?
Reopening the room link puts them back in their seat with their score. Someone who's away is skipped when it's their turn to guess.
